Study English and Meet the World in Vancouver!

    現在カナダのバンクーバーで在外研究中のスタン・カーク准教授(国際言語文化センター)からのメッセージです。

Vancouver is one of the most popular places in the world to study English. Why? International students have various reasons for choosing this city. Some say that they like the mild climate, the beautiful ocean and the mountain scenery. The city is located on the southwest coast of Canada, so the ocean and mountain views are amazing. Other students like the delicious food (especially the seafood!) and the many kinds of restaurants. Students who very active can enjoy outdoor sports and nature activities such as sailing, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, snowboarding, whale-watching and so on. Some students prefer to relax by shopping or taking a slow evening walk along a beach and watching the sun set behind the mountains.

These are all good reasons for choosing to study English in Vancouver, but I think there is a reason that is even more important than all of them. That reason is the interesting variety of people and cultures that you will meet and experience in Vancouver. Someone has called Vancouver “the whole world in one city”! Of course this is an exaggeration, but it is true that many of the people who live in Vancouver were born in another country outside Canada, and these people still keep their own languages and cultures.  So, in addition to many kinds of tasty ethnic restaurants, you can experience festivals and cultural events from countries all over the world during your stay in Vancouver.

If you take a walk in a park or in downtown Vancouver, you will probably hear people speaking not only English, but also Chinese, French, German, Korean, Spanish, Russian, and many more languages. Or, if you relax in a coffee shop and listen, you might hear young people from different countries trying to communicate with each other in English. Not only are they practicing English with each other, but they are also sharing each other’s cultures and making life friends from all over the world. Perhaps this is the best reward for studying English in a multi-cultural city such as Vancouver.

Every year some students from Konan University go to Vancouver and study English at the University of British Columbia. It is one of the most beautiful university campuses in Canada and has one of the most famous English education programs in North America.
